Essentially, it's the basis for the character.

Description (Physical/Personality/History)
When Sariya was young (7 years old), her father was killed, leaving her and her mother to fend for themselves. No matter what her mother said, Sariya always blamed their hardship on her father, after all, he was supposed to care for the family.

The years of toil wore heavily on the family and shortly after Sariya's 17th year her mother fell gravely ill. Sariya did everything she could to maintain the meager life they were used to, but her mother was beyond her ability to help. Nearly 6 months after falling ill, Sariya's mother died, but not before passing on one final message to her beloved daughter.

In her last moments, she told Sariya of a precious heirloom-a staff-hidden in their home. Their family had long since been trusted with the staff and its secrets, but one day, someone came seeking it. Her father died that day, but slew the would-be thief in the conflict. Sariya's mother told her how to remove the staff (and it's 'clone') from the bed's headboard and taught her a simple command that made one glow and one seem to dim the light around it. Enough to tell them apart. But she passed on before she could tell her daughter which was the heirloom and which was the fake.

With the understanding that her father died protecting them rather than abandoning them, Sariya left her home and prayed that he forgive her for her years of hating him. She repeats that prayer every day, always fearing it is unheard among the heavens. Her greatest fear is that her parents spirits have turned their backs in shame of their daughter.

Her life now revolves around her family's staff and discovering its secrets that died with her parents. She has traveled much and learned much, but has thus far avoided places the staves might be recognized too easily. If someone was willing to kill-or die-for the staff more than a decade ago, she had better be cautious about who knows they are special... and that she cannot use them.

She is very good with either one of the staves as a weapon and will use them in a fight if she believes she has a chance. She is more likely to find a way to escape with both staves if possible. They are her only link to her father and she believes that if she looses them, she dishonors herself and her father.

Roleplay Sample:
Sariya rose from her morning prayers to discover she'd been surrounded by bandits. She calmly took count. Six. To onr. Grim odds.
"Very brave," came a voice from the forest shadows, "for a lone girl to stand firm against so many ruffians... Or very naive."
Seven... Very grim.
Forcing her shoulders square, she looked around the circle again, meeting each leer squarely. "What is it you want?" she called to the shadows. She already knew the answer. but she needed the time to activate the staff... if it would fire at all.
"We want your money," came a laugh from the shadows, "your pretty staff, and the clothes off your... back." The last brought a laugh from the thugs.
Sariya took a small step back and planted herself firmly. She held the staff out with mock confidence and started muttering in a mockery of a spellcaster, pleading with the staff in gibberish. Why won't it work??
Two in the circle lost their nerve at the charade and looked into the shadows... pointing Sariya's gaze to the robed leader. Damn! A mage!
The leader took a place in the circle and examined Sariya, who was still muttering to the staff. "Pitiful child. Is that truely what you think magic sounds like? Allow me to... correct your error."
With that, his fingers began an intricate dance and he chanted impossibly fast. Sariya thrust the staff out to protect herself from the fire gathering at the bandit-mage's fingertips when a blinding light enveloped her-not from the mage's hand, but her own. She thought she was dead for a moment, gone on into the light. But when the light cleared, she stood in a lush green meadow at the edge of a huge depression, her staff's mate at her feet. All her other things were gone. Or rather, they were likely where she left them and she was gone. But to where?
Her answer came easily as she looked to the lowest point of the depression, some hundred paces away, and saw a huge white tower glittering in the morning light as it rose up into the clouds and beyond. The Tower Magus! More mages?
Sariya calmly retrieved her staff from the ground and strapped them both into their slings on her back and ran away as if her life depended on it.

Re: Sariya Gartenstaf

Welcome to Torân, Sariya.
Each of us dreams. In mine, I see my home--Lost to me, perhaps for all time. In His, the home He desired was made whole and real. Yet, you tell me we are the same?

It cannot be.
